A is for … Antung (Dandong) 丹东市老照片

Warren Swire made a handful of visits to this port at the mouth of Yalu River between 1911-12 and 1934. The border with Korea, then under Japanese control was close by.

Jardine, Matheson building at (Antung) Dandong, 1911-12, Swire collection, sw03-106.

This shot shows the installation at the harbourside of Jardine, Matheson & Co. The port had been opened to foreign trade and residence in 1907. Carl Crow, in his 1921 Traveller’s Handbook for China was quite unforgiving: ‘Antung does not merit a visit’.
