University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Ba01-139. No caption in the album for this photograph. The Rev. Alfred ILIFF (of the Church Missionary Society) (1863-1908) is on the left. His wife, Eleanor (Ellie) Graham Iliff (1870-1959) is sitting with baby Edgar Iliff (1904-1996). Sitting on the right is Lily Iliff (1898-1980), who qualified as a doctor in 1919 and returned to China as Dr Lily Graham Iliff, working in Guilin (Kweilin). Dr Lily Iliff married Arthur John May A.R.I.B.A., an architect, in Hong Kong on 17 April 1928, and he designed two extant churches in the city. The twins Reggie (1902-1953) and Mary Iliff are beside their father. The boy in the sailor suit is George Iliff (1899-1918), who was a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps. This photograph may have been taken in Guangzhou (Canton) or Zhaoqing (Shiuhing). The Rev. Alfred Iliff died in Hong Kong of typhoid fever, age 45. See Ba01-140.
